On 16 June, ERGaR held a members-only webinar focused on biomethane certification in maritime transport, in light of recent updates from the European Sustainable Shipping Forum (ESSF) and the IMO’s new decarbonisation framework.
Speakers included Rafik Ammar (e-NG Coalition), Tiphaine Angla (FuelsEurope), and Ratna Nataliani (Hapag-Lloyd AG), who shared insights on lifecycle assessment (LCA), the new IMO carbon pricing mechanism, and certification needs.
Key takeaways:
- Certification and traceability are essential for compliance and market growth.
- A harmonised EU-IMO framework is critical to enable biomethane use in shipping.
- New documentation tools like “proof of compliance” can address current gaps.
The session marked an important step in aligning maritime fuel certification and supporting the role of biomethane in sustainable shipping. ERGaR will continue its work to push for robust and interoperable certification standards.
