Brussels, August 2025
As Europe accelerates its transition toward renewable energy, biomethane has emerged as a n important factor in decarbonising the gas sector. Yet, to fully realise its potential, trust, transparency, and cross-border cooperation are essential.
At the upcoming 4th Biogas Forum, part of the InventU Fuel Evolution Congress (16–17 September, Berlin), the European Renewable Gas Registry (ERGaR) will take an active role in shaping the conversation on market integration and certification.
In a pre-event interview, Tim Hamers, Secretary General of ERGaR, explained why voluntary certification is essential for building a credible and scalable biomethane market across Europe. He pointed to four key themes shaping the industry’s development: the need for cross-border certification so biomethane produced in one country can be reliably traded and recognised across Europe, the operational and regulatory challenges of overcoming the fragmented market and aligning national systems, the impact of evolving GHG reporting standards such as the GHG Protocol, European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), and the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and the role of voluntary markets in giving companies the tools to credibly integrate biomethane into their sustainability strategies.
Join the Conversation in Berlin
The Biogas Forum will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, and innovators to discuss how renewable gases can accelerate Europe’s energy transition. ERGaR invites stakeholders to join the dialogue and explore solutions that will unlock biomethane’s full potential.
