Amber Grid Joins the ERGaR Hub, Expanding Opportunities for Lithuanian Biomethane

Amber Grid has joined the ERGaR Hub that connects renewable gas guarantees of origin registries across Europe and enables their secure cross-border exchange.

This development comes as biomethane production in Lithuania continues to grow rapidly, opening up new export opportunities. By joining the ERGaR Hub, Guarantees of Origin (GOs) issued for Lithuanian biomethane can now be transferred electronically to Germany, as well as exchanged with registries in Denmark and Slovakia. This allows market participants to carry out cross-border trade more easily, quickly, and transparently.

The timing coincides with strong growth in Lithuania’s biomethane sector. At the beginning of 2026, 12 biomethane plants were operating in the country, with a combined capacity of 67 MW. In January and February alone, more than 60 GWh of guarantees of origin were issued for biomethane, 2.4 times more than during the same period last year.

Prior to joining the ERGaR Hub, Lithuania’s Guarantees of Origin registry was thoroughly assessed by ERGaR. The audit covered processes, the regulatory environment, and technical solutions, confirming compliance with European standards and ensuring smooth and reliable exchange between countries.

Currently, registries from Austria, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom are connected to the ERGaR Hub. Lithuania’s participation increases market transparency and expands trading opportunities in the region.

The technical implementation was significantly supported by European Energy Exchange, with which Amber Grid signed a service agreement in July 2025, enabling the registry’s integration into the international infrastructure.
