New Statistics – Q1 has been a record quarter for the ERGaR CoO Scheme

In Q1 2026, 1.38 TWh of biomethane certificates were transferred via ERGaR. This is the highest quarterly volume ever recorded under the scheme. This includes transfers of Guarantees of Origin and other Certificates of Origin.

It reflects the continued growth of Europe’s biomethane market and the increasing role of cross-border certificate transfers.

Key trends in Q1:

  • Germany remained the largest importing market with Switzerland followed as the second-largest importer
  • The UK overtook Denmark as the leading exporting market for the quarter

With the vast majority cross-border biomethane certificate trade in Europe taking place through the ERGaR CoO scheme, these figures emphasize the essential role for the European biomethane market.
