Together with seven other industry associations representing the renewable and low-carbon fuel value chain, we have issued a joint statement calling on the European Commission to preserve the core principles of the mass balance system under the Renewable Energy Directive (RED).
The mass balance system allows renewable gases to move through existing gas networks and LNG terminals without physical segregation, while keeping their sustainability characteristics traceable.
The joint statement calls for product groups based on similar fuel characteristics, continued mass balancing across shared infrastructure, retention of the three-month balancing period, and swift, consistent implementation of the Union Database across EU Member States.
Preserving these principles is essential to support the development of Europe’s renewable and low-carbon gas markets while strengthening sustainability certification.
