When ERGaR was founded in Ghent in September 2016, nine national biomethane registries operated side by side with no connection between them. Ten years on, ERGaR handled 93% of all cross-border biomethane certificate transfers in the EU in 2025.
To mark our 10th anniversary, three people who helped shape ERGaR in its early years have co-written an article reflecting on how the organisation and the market have developed, and what comes next:
- Dr. Attila Kovacs, ERGaR’s first Secretary General, on why ERGaR had to exist and how the RED MB Scheme evolved into the ERGaR CoO Scheme
- Stefanie Königsberger (AGCS Biomethane Registry Austria) on what ten years of biomethane certification have taught us, and where fragmentation remains
- Jesse Scharf (Green Gas Certification Scheme) on what the market needs to build a liquid, trusted European biomethane market by 2036
We would like to thank all three authors for their time and insight, and everyone who has been part of ERGaR’s journey so far.
